ENGLISHTo form the compound past tense in French, an auxiliary verb is used along with a past participle. The past participle is derived from the infinitive form of the verb, which is not conjugated.
The formation of the past participle varies depending on the group to which the verb belongs. It is worth recalling that French verbs are divided into three distinct groups:
Group 1 – Verbs ending in -er (except for the verb ‘aller’).
Group 2 – The majority of verbs ending in -ir.
Group 3 – Verbs ending in -ir (different from group 2), -re, -oir, as well as the verb ‘aller’.
It is important to note that the verbs ‘avoir’ and ‘être’ are not associated with any specific group.
Verbs in groups 1 and 2 generally follow a regular conjugation, although there are some exceptions. As for verbs in group 3, their conjugation follows various patterns. Thus, two main methods of forming the past participle emerge: the regular method and the irregular method.
4.5.2 Formation régulière du participe passé
Verbes du premier groupe
Les verbes du premier groupe (-er) forment le participe passé de manière régulière. Le participe passé est formé en remplaçant la terminaison -er de l’infinitif par la terminaison -é.
Par exemple :
Parler (infinitif) -> Parlé (participe passé)
Chanter (infinitif) -> Chanté (participe passé)
Verbs of the first group (-er) form the past participle in a regular manner. The past participle is formed by replacing the -er ending of the infinitive with the -é ending.
For example:
Parler (infinitive) -> Parlé (past participle)
Chanter (infinitive) -> Chanté (past participle)
Verbes du deuxième groupe
Les verbes du deuxième groupe (-ir) forment le participe passé de manière régulière. Le participe passé est formé en remplaçant la terminaison -ir de l’infinitif par la terminaison -i.
Par exemple :
Finir (infinitif) -> Fini (participe passé)
Choisir (infinitif) -> Choisi (participe passé)
Verbs of the second group (-ir) form the past participle in a regular manner. The past participle is formed by replacing the -ir ending of the infinitive with the -i ending.
For example:
Finir (infinitive) -> Fini (past participle)
Choisir (infinitive) -> Choisi (past participle)
4.5.3 Formation irrégulière du participe passé
Les verbe du troisième groupe forment, dans l’ensemble, le participe passé de manière irrégulière, mais on peut noter quelques schémas.
ENGLISHThe verbs of the third group form the past participle in an irregular way, but we can note some patterns.
Terminaison -er
Le verbe ‘aller’ forme le participe passé comme les verbes du premier groupe: aller – allé
ENGLISHThe verb ‘aller’ forms the past participle like the verbs of the first group: aller – allé
Terminaisons -ir
Dans le groupe de verbes qui, à l’infinitif, ont la terminaison -ir (verbes différents des verbes reguliers -ir du 2e groupe), on peut observer quelques régularités dans la formation du participe passé. Les participes passés issus de ces verbes ont les terminaisons : -i, -is, -u, -ert.
ENGLISHIn the group of verbs which, in the infinitive form, have the ending -ir (verbs distinct from the regular -ir verbs of the 2nd group), we can observe some regularities in the formation of the past participle. The past participles derived from these verbs have the endings: -i, -is, -u, -ert.
A.
En général, les verbes de ce sous-groupe ont le participe passé qui se termine par -i, comme dans le cas des verbes reguliers -ir du 2e groupe.
ENGLISHIn general, verbs of this group have the past participle ending in -i, as in the case of regular -ir verbs of the 2nd group.

D.

Terminaisons -re et -oir
Dans les groupes de verbes qui ont la terminaison -re, et -oir, il y a plusieurs manières de former le participe passé. On peut les regrouper en quatre catégories:

A.
